Location against the port and your customers
A warehouse close to Port Klang cuts drayage time and detention risk on import containers. A warehouse close to your customers' delivery points cuts last-mile cost and gets goods out faster. Few sites are both — check which one matters more for your mix of import volume versus local distribution, and check actual road access rather than distance on a map.

Racked storage versus floor stacking
Racked storage means every pallet has a fixed, trackable location. Floor stacking is cheaper to fit out but slower to pick from and harder to count accurately, especially once stock rotates fast. Ask what proportion of a warehouse's space is actually racked — “available” space can mean either racked or floor.

Loading bays and truck turnaround
Bay count sets the ceiling on how many trucks a warehouse can load or unload in a day. Too few bays and your trucks queue, drivers wait, and you pay for idle time you didn't cause. Ask how many bays are dedicated to your account versus shared across the whole site.

Stock accuracy and how it's proven
Any warehouse will tell you their stock accuracy is high. Ask how it's measured — cycle counts, full counts, or only at year-end — and ask to see the process behind the number. A warehouse that can show you how a discrepancy gets logged and resolved is one that's watching its stock properly.

Integration with transport — the hidden cost of separate vendors
Warehousing and trucking bought from two separate vendors means two invoices, two service levels, and no single party accountable when a truck is late to collect from the warehouse. Every handoff between vendors is a place where a pallet sits, a booking slips, or a claim gets disputed between the two of them instead of fixed.

FMCG demand isn't flat. Promotions, festive periods and new product launches push volume well above the average month, and a warehouse sized only for the average will fall over exactly when it matters. Ask what throughput a site actually runs at its peak, not its typical month.

Keeping them together removes the handoff between vendors — no gap between “goods left the warehouse” and “goods are on the truck”. It also gives you one team to call when something goes wrong, instead of two vendors pointing at each other.
How do I check a warehouse's stock accuracy before signing?
Ask for their cycle count process and how discrepancies are logged, alongside the headline percentage. A warehouse that can walk you through a real discrepancy and how it was resolved is showing you the process actually runs.
Can a warehouse in Klang handle sudden volume spikes from a promotion?
It depends on how much spare bay and rack capacity the site carries above its average load. Ask what the site's peak throughput has actually been, and check that against your own peak, before you sign.
